This theme of the year is “Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth,” a strong signal that the international community recognizes the important contribution of family farmers to world food security.
Today’s Youth = Tomorrow’s Family Farmers
Family farming is the predominant form of agriculture in the food production sector, but to cultivate the next generation of family farmers, we must invest in youth first. Young people make up roughly one fifth of the population of developing and emerging economies and face global unemployment levels from 10 to 28%. The number of young people of working age is increasing while this same group rejects careers in the agriculture and food system. Thus, maintaining their interest in agriculture as a profession is vital to future food security.
In homage to the young professionals’ role in Family Farming in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition and improving livelihoods, YPARD is organizing a contest to identify the best ways to hook and maintain young people’s attention to the agricultural field.
