About ICARDAThe International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is an international autonomous, non-profit, research organization temporarily based in Beirut, Lebanon supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICARDA is committed to the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research, and the equitable use of natural resources. Main purpose of the positionTo assist the Turkey/ ICARDA cereal pathology research program at Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) in Izmir, Turkey.Main responsibilities
  • Participation in field monitoring and surveillance cereal pathogens in Turkey
  • Preparation media for pathogen isolation
  • Isolation, multiplication, collection and preservation of cereal pathogens
  • Preparation of cereal pathogen inoculum and seedling inoculations
  • Participate in race analysis and seedling assessment of cereal rust pathogens, data collection and data managements
  • Assist in cereal pathology field activities (inoculation, data collection and harvesting)
  • Assist in preparation of international disease screening nurseries
  • Assist in supervision of graduate students and daily labors needed for greenhouse and cereal pathology laboratories
  • Participate in yearly crossing activities
  • Assist the program in any other requested technical activities
Education, qualifications and experience
  • BSc or diploma with minimum 5 years of experience on cereal pathology
  • Basic knowledge of working with pathology laboratory equipments
  • Good knowledge of working with computer (Microsoft Office software)
  • Basic knowledge in English writing and data recording and entry
  • Ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds
  • Turkish/ International driving license
Terms of appointment, salary and benefitsThe initial period of employment will be for 3 year of which the first 6 months will be probationary period. Subsequent employment is decided based on the merit and productivity of the staff member, and continued need for the position.
