The Kenya mapping workshop is underway, with 30 young professionals excitedly learning GIS skills to become more competitive in the field of ARD.  Attendees come from many different parts of Kenya, from the capital Nairobi, to the Western region in the town of Eldoret to the northern region, in Mandera.

Several expectations from the training were expressed at the beginning, ranging from ‘learning more about GIS technology’  to setting up their own consultancy for mapping services for researchers and farmers.

The groups have learned how to use GPS units, going out into the field to collect data points, uploading the data into open source software and editing the maps themselves.

On the last day, the groups will be presenting their maps and will receive feedback from the professionals mappers in the group.  Additional presentations have also been provided on how to write a business plan and what you need to set up your own consultancy.  The business plans will also be presented on the last day, which will be critiqued by the business trainer.

It has been agreed that mapping is an area for which demand is increasing steadily in Kenya and for which there is currently an under-supply of trained resource persons.  Young professionals are the next in line to fill that gap!
