Project Description
Investigation of species habitat preferences and understanding population dynamics are integral parts of ecology, as well as the basis for establishing effective conservation strategies. The disertation aims are to determine the effect of environmental characteristics at three relevant levels of influence (parameters of aquatic habitats, their close surroundings, spatial structure and the quality of selected habitats and populations), on the presence and abundance of the agile frog (Rana dalmatina) in four large spoil banks in north Bohemia. Such multiscale approach has been virtually neglected in amphibian studies. Furthermore, amphibians typically exhibit great population fluctuations. Which can be shown in our long-term data of clutch abundance in the study area (since 2005), we consequently want to find out, whether the significances of habitat preferences can be affected by an overall population size, varying greatly during the years.

Background and Obligations of Ph.D. student:
- Four-year study; time flexibility; active participation at international conferences
- Publication activity 1 (at least 2 publications in the journal with IF)
- Pedagogical activities 2
- Obligation to complete a 4-week international internship within this topic
- Regular Scholarship (CZK 9,300 - 13,000 per month)
- In the case of above-standard publishing activities (at least 3 publications) the possibility of writing a dissertation in the form of an annotated work
- The scholarship is gradually increasing along with the fulfilled obligations of the PhD student
Please notice that the regular scholarship does not cover the living costs completely and you will need to search for some additional funding.
Note that this is just a pre-selection. The selected candidate will be invited to submit official application to the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
