Postdoc fellow in agricultural systems

The Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) at the University of Copenhagen is seeking to recruit a 2-year position for a postdoc fellow to participate in research projects regarding evaluation of coffee varieties and small scale farming systems, commencing on 1st October 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The main tasks of the postdoc fellow will be research regarding assessments of the agronomic performance, profitability and product quality of new coffee varieties in different regions in South America, Africa and Asia based on extended field work stays. This research is part of the EU H2020 project BREEDCAFS, working to develop coffee systems and genotypes able to resist climate change, and involving multiple partners in Europe and elsewhere; as such, the position requires close collaboration with highly interdisciplinary and culturally diverse research teams. Other tasks include obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication, active research fundraising, and research-based teaching. To a limited extent the position may also involve performance of other duties like advisory work for The Ministry of the Environment and Food.

Scientific environment 

The main activities at IFRO are research, education, research based public sector services and broader dissemination, particularly within the fields of environment, natural resources, global development, food and agriculture as well as consumption, bioethics and governance. The postdoc fellow will be part of the section Production, Markets and Policy. You will get to work in a pleasant, international and collaborative atmosphere with colleagues from many countries. 

Formal requirements 

Applicants must have a relevant Ph.D. degree, preferably in Agricultural Development, Natural Resource Management and Economics or similar, and must have experiences with field work in developing countries and with research in relevant fields.  

Applicants will be assessed based on their qualifications within the following scientific areas: 

  • Documented scientific qualifications, including a Ph.D. in relation to the above subject areas
  • Documented insight in agricultural systems in a developing country and smallholder context 
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative fieldwork, preferably in the tropics 
  • Documented teaching experience  
  • Documented research proposal writing and fundraising 
  • Experience with working in an interdisciplinary environment  
  • Well-developed collaborative and interpersonal skills  
  • Fluency in English; preferable also competencies in Spanish or French.
