The Research Group BioDIVA in close cooperation with the Institute for Environmental
Economics and World Trade at the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) seeks a Ph.D.
student. The researcher will study the distribution of public and private costs and benefits in
agrobiodiversity management with a focus on the potential of labelling as an instrument to
cover non-market goods and ecosystem-services by indigenous peoples with special
concern to equity.
The research group BioDIVA in Social-Ecological Research (SÖF www.sozial-oekologische-
forschung.org/en/index.php) is attached to the research initiative TRUST (Transdisciplinary
Rural Development Studies), based at the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape at the LUH.
The research group develops transformation knowledge towards gender-equitable and
sustainable use of biodiversity for the future utilisation and maintenance of complex farming-
systems at the case of rice-biodiversity in the Western Ghats in Kerala, South-India with an
inter- and transdisciplinary approach. BioDIVA cooperates with MSSRF/India, GTZ/Germany
and IFPRI/USA.
To contribute to the social-ecology of agrobiodiversity, BioDIVA seeks a Ph.D. student,
contingent on the final approval by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
Funding period is envisaged from January 1st, 2010 for four years. Residency in Hanover is
required.
Expected qualifications:
oUniversity degree in economics, resource or agricultural economics, preferably with a
focus on agro-economics in developing countries
oExperience in applying econometric techniques
oAbility to work both independently and in an interdisciplinary team
oGood working knowledge of English, including writing skills
oIntercultural communication skills
oOverseas experience; ability and motivation to travel
