FAO’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia has an internship opening for an intern based in Tirana, Albania for 5 months starting from September 2016 onwards. The intern will be contributing to FAO’s work on disaster risk reduction in the region, but in particularly in Albania.

Under the direct supervision of the Climate Change and Energy Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia (REUT) in close collaboration with the Assistant Representative of Albania, other officers and consultants, the intern will contribute to FAO’s work on disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation (CCA) and climate smart agriculture (CSA) in the region, specifically Albania regarding the following:

The specific job description is the following:

Under the direct supervision of the Climate Change and Energy Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia (REUT) in close collaboration with the Assistant Representative of Albania, other officers and consultants, the intern will contribute to FAO’s work on disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation (CCA) and climate smart agriculture (CSA) in the region, specifically Albania regarding the following:

  • Assist in reviewing and analyzing the institutional DRR system for Albania, which includes:
  • Identifying and analyzing the national legal and institutional frameworks, including national DRR laws, policies, plans, strategies as well as sectoral planning instruments regarding the extent of     DRR mainstreaming;
  • Obtaining an overview of the institutional set up of relevant stakeholders, including relevant ministries, hydro-meteorological agencies, research and extension services and other stakeholders at all levels: This involves reviewing roles and responsibilities, functioning of Albania’s early warning system specifically for agriculture, existence of inter-sectoral coordination, collaboration and communication mechanisms, availability of human, technical and financial resources, identifying strengths, gaps and capacity needs with the aim to improve overall institutional planning and implementation capacities to reduce the adverse impact of natural hazards on agriculture;
  • Support the analysis of climate change impact on the agriculture sector in Albania and the identification of climate change adaptation and mitigation needs within the context of transitioning to CSA;
  • Assist in conducting research and desk related work with regard to flood recovery support for food security and agriculture, with the aim to build resilience to natural hazards, in particular floods;
  • Assist in the preparation of presentation/capacity building/knowledge and information materials specifically for Albania on DRR, CCA, CSA, e.g.: reviewing and contributing to training material developed on DRR, CCA and CSA for various target audiences, including e.g. youth, farmers, extension officers;
  • Provide organization support for any relevant workshops, events and training sessions;
  • Provide support to other related projects and programmes;
  • Perform any other related duties and activities as required.
