From December 2nd to 13th, I had the incredible privilege of participating in the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This transformative journey, made possible by the unwavering support of the UNCCD Youth Caucus, was an eye-opening experience filled with learning, advocacy, and collaboration.
Before diving into the conference itself, I must highlight the remarkable hospitality of the Saudi people. Their humor, humility, and generosity left a lasting impression on me. Whether through engaging conversations, shared cups of traditional coffee and dates, or the endless supply of coffee at the Green Zone Pavilion, their warmth was truly unforgettable.
I had the honor of moderating two pivotal YPARD events focused on collective action for land restoration among marginalized communities. These took place at the CGIAR Pavilion and the GECCI Pavilion. Additionally, I led the YPARD UNCCD Policy Working Group, contributing to the YPARD UNCCD Position Paper and the UNCCD Youth Caucus’s youth statement, which was presented at the closing event. Seeing various parties genuinely engage with youth concerns and recommendations was truly encouraging.
Beyond moderating, I was privileged to participate as a panelist in multiple sessions:
Beyond speaking, I attended over 15 side events, gaining insights into global land restoration initiatives—like Saudi Arabia’s ambitious billion-tree planting project. COP 16 also offered incredible networking opportunities, allowing me to connect with key figures, including the UNCCD Secretary-General, directors, government ministers, and private sector leaders.
Attending COP 16 for the first time was both overwhelming and enlightening. With over 50 side events and simultaneous negotiations happening, I quickly learned the importance of strategizing to prioritize impactful sessions. While formal negotiations are led by designated country delegates, youth voices are amplified through CSOs, youth negotiator academies, and government representatives. This experience has inspired me to join the Youth Negotiators Academy for future mentorship opportunities.
One of the standout aspects of COP 16 was witnessing Saudi Arabia’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Their billion-tree initiative, investment in advanced technology, and strict environmental regulations are impressive. As a gesture of sustainability, all participants received seeds from 15 tree species to plant in their home countries—an initiative I look forward to implementing in Uganda.
Beyond the conference halls, I took time to explore Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural landscape. The highlights included visiting The Boulevard, a vibrant attraction featuring global landmarks like the Egyptian pyramids, the African village, and the London Eye, as well as enjoying scenic boat cruises. These experiences added a cultural depth to my COP 16 journey.
COP 16 was truly a transformative experience—a platform to advocate for youth, collaborate with global stakeholders, and gain invaluable insights to drive future action. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this journey possible, especially the UNCCD Youth Caucus, for giving me the opportunity to serve as a rapporteur.
As I return home, I do so with renewed inspiration, valuable connections, and a stronger commitment to advancing sustainability and land restoration efforts worldwide. Looking ahead, I’m excited about the next step—COP 17 in Mongolia—where I hope to continue amplifying youth voices in the fight for a sustainable planet.
Here’s to building momentum for a greener future!
