The Federal Office for Agriculture FOAG is committed to ensuring sustainable agricultural production in order to contribute to food security in Switzerland. It takes into account the various interests, developing the legal basis for a progressive and effective agricultural policy and implement this policy efficiently.
Madeleine Kaufmann has been the coordinator of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) since 2018. She prepares and represents the Swiss position in FAO's governance bodies. Madeleine also works on technical portfolios in the field of "youth in agriculture", responsible agricultural investments and agroecology.
Célia Bühler is the YPARD representative for Switzerland. After a bachelor's degree in agronomy at École des Sciences Agronomiques, and Food Sciences (HAFL) in Zollikofen, Célia continued with working as an assistant in the Agriculture Internationale group. She is currently pursuing her master's thesis on composting of coffee production in Nicaragua.

«L’OFAG a le pouvoir de faire évoluer les choses au niveau national.»
Mon rôle est de créer des liens entre les jeunes impliqués dans les systèmes alimentaires et les partenaires pertinents, ainsi que de rendre visibles les opportunités. Encourager les échanges entrejeunes de différents milieux (pratique, recherche, entreprenariat, politique) pour créer d’avantage de synergies. YPARD étant actif dans plus de 70 pays, cela offre aux jeunes suisses l’opportunité d’échanger avec d’autres et de s’inspirer d’initiatives internationales pour relever les défis globaux ensemble.
La diversité! Que ce soient les climats, les systèmes de production, les cultures, ou les points de vue. C’est un langage universel, au cœur de notre quotidien, tant pour les producteurs queles consommateurs. Attirer l’attention sur chaque aspect de ce prisme est un défi, mais nécessaire pour une compréhension mutuelle, de la fourche à la fourchette.
Je pense à une grande institution. Je ne connais de loin pas tous ses rouages, mais je pense que l’OFAG à ce pouvoir d’être un acteur central et respecté, même s’il a quelquefois cette image sévère. L’OFAG a le pouvoir de faire évoluer les choses au niveau national.
Que l’OFAG garde toujours un lien étroit et une vision éclairée sur les réalités du terrain. Les échanges et des engagements concrets sont cruciaux pour donner des perspectives motivantes. J’espère que l’OFAG poursuivra le dialogue avec un intérêt sincère pour celles et ceux dont il a le pouvoir de modifier le quotidien. Pour YPARD, j’espère trouver à l’OFAG des partenaires intéressés à créer un réseau facilitant l’identification des opportunités pour les jeunes, et les encourageant à s’impliquer proactivement.
Les jeunes dans l’agriculture sont confrontés à des défis pratiques tels que la viabilité économique et l’adaptation aux changements climatiques, ainsi qu’à des défis plus larges de représentation et de reconnaissance. YPARD peut y contribuer en promouvant des initiatives innovantes, en créant des espaces d’échange et en plaidant pour une véritable inclusion et écoute des jeunes dans les décisions qui les concernent. Cela afin de voir s’opérer un réel transfert de responsabilités.

My role is to create links between young people involved in food systems and relevant partners, and to make opportunities visible. Encouraging exchanges between young people from different backgrounds (practical research, entrepreneurship, politics) to create greater synergies.
YPARD is active in over 70 countries, offers young Swiss people the opportunity to exchange ideas with others and draw inspiration from international initiatives to tackle global challenges together.
Diversity! Whether it's climates production systems, crops or points of view. It's a universal language, at the heart of our daily for producers and consumers alike. Drawing attention to every aspect of this prism is a challenge, but one that is necessary for a mutual understanding, from farm to fork.
I think of a large institution. I don't know all its inner workings, but I do think that the FOAG has the power to be a central and respected player, even if it sometimes has this self image. FOAG has the power to make things evolve at the national level.
That FOAG always maintains a close and an informed view of the realities in the field. Exchange and concrete commitments are crucial to provide motivating perspectives. I hope that FOAG will continue the dialogue with a sincere interest in those whose daily lives it has the power to change everyday life. For YPARD, I hope to find partners at the FOAG interested in creating a network to help identifying opportunities for young people, and encouraging them to get pro-actively involved.
Young people in agriculture are facing practical challenges such as economic viability and adaptation to climate change, as well as broader challenges of representation and recognition. YPARD can contribute by promoting innovative initiatives, creating opportunities for exchange, and by advocating a veritable inclusion of young people in the decisions that concern them. In this way, we aim to bring about a real transfer of responsibility.
