ODI is seeking to appoint a talented and dynamic Research Officer that will contribute to the Research and Policy in Development Group with the aim to develop, fundraise for, conduct and manage policy relevant, high-quality and innovative research, policy advice and public affairs programmes, broadly within the Institute’s overall strategy and with the aim of inspiring and informing policy.

As such, the successful applicant will be leading the Applied Research component of the MasterCard Foundation Youth Livelihoods Consortia Learning Partnership that will focus on identifying the principal push and pull factors driving youth engagement in and out of farming, migration (rural/urban) and employment (seasonal/informal/formal) patterns

The Forest Economics, Policy and Products Division leads FAO’s work on the development of effective forest policies, governance and institutions and provides leadership for the social and economic dimensions of forestry, including the contributions to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. It liaises with member countries, civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from National Forest Programmes to sustainable forest industries and forest products promotion. The Division is also concerned with the collection, analysis and dissemination of information on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products.
The FAO Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Programme is seated within FOE and has the objective of supporting stakeholders in eligible countries to address their locally defined FLEGT related issues.

Reporting Lines

FAO's Subregional Office for the Pacific is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing and implementing agreed strategies for addressing sub-regional food, agriculture and rural development priorities. It develops and maintains relations with Pacific institutions. The Subregional Office is a subsidiary of FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

The Programme Officer reports to the Subregional Coordinator for the Pacific, through the Supervisor of the Multi-disciplinary Team, and will work in close consultation with the Operations Officer of the FAO-GEF portfolio in the Pacific, Lead Technical Officers (LTOs), Project Task Forces and the GEF Unit in the Investment Centre Division.

The Regional Office for RLC is responsible for leading FAO’s response to regional priorities for food security, agriculture and rural development through the identification, planning, and implementation of FAO’s priority activities in the region. It ensures a multidisciplinary approach to programmes, identifies priority areas of action for the Organization in the Region and, in collaboration with departments and divisions at Headquarters, develops, promotes and oversees FAO's strategic response to regional priorities.
RLC also advises on the incorporation of regional priorities into the Organization’s Programme of Work and Budget and implements approved programmes and projects in the region, monitors the level of programme implementation and draws attention to problems and deficiencies. RLC develops and maintains relations with region-wide institutions including the Regional Economic Integration Organizations (REIOs).
The Regional Office supports regional policy dialogue on food security, agriculture and rural development issues, facilitates the emergence of regional partnerships, and supports capacity development and resource mobilization for food security, agriculture and rural development in the region.

The Disaster Risk Management Officer will be under the overall supervision of the Officer responsible for increasing the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the functional guidance of TCE, in consultation with the relevant technical divisions at FAO headquarters and SO5 RLC Team.

The Economic and Social Development Department (ES) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aspires to be a global centre of excellence in providing policy relevant information and analysis in support of the achievement of FAO’s Strategic Objectives of ending hunger and rural poverty, while making agriculture and food systems inclusive and sustainable, and rural livelihoods resilient. The Department analyses trends and policy issues related to food and agriculture, and keeps member countries and the global community up to date about the latest economic and social developments related to food and agriculture and their policy implications. The Department’s analytical work informs the Organization’s policy support to Member Countries to achieve its Strategic Objectives, provide relevant global public goods and fulfill other mandated corporate responsibilities. The Department supports FAO’s role as the foremost authoritative source of standards and methods as well as of timely and reliable data and statistics on hunger, nutrition, food and agriculture. It is responsible for monitoring global progress and prospects for eliminating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, producing a number of FAO flagship publications, serving as secretariat for the Committee on Commodity Problems and the G20 Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS), and advising on governance challenges faced by the Organization.
As head of the Department, the ADG provides intellectual leadership and strategic guidance to ensure full delivery on all results within its mandate at headquarters and at decentralized levels. As part of FAO’s senior management team, the ADG helps to ensure the coherence and quality of FAO policies, messages and work across organizational units as well as consistency with corporate goals and programmes. He/she sets an example for a positive, innovative and productive work culture within the Department and the Organization. The ADG serves on corporate teams to advance the Organization’s objectives, and facilitates strategic partnerships with external organizations. More specifically, the ADG:

The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) is a joint international organisation of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States and the European Union (EU). Its mission is to advance food and nutritional security, increase prosperity and encourage sound natural resource management in ACP countries.

It facilitates access to information and knowledge; supports evidence-based, multi-stakeholder development of agricultural policies and strategies; promotes inclusive value chain development and use of ICTs; and strengthens the capacities of agricultural and rural development institutions and communities. CTA operates under the framework of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement and is funded by the EU.

CTA wishes to recruit an ICT4Ag Associate to support the implementation of activities of its youth and ICT (ARDYIS) project, other youth in agriculture initiatives and ICT for Agriculture tasks. These include projects funded in the framework of the 2015 Youth Call for Proposals, the next edition of the Youth in Agriculture Blog Competition (YoBloCo Awards) and the AgriHack Talent initiative.

The European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) are partnering to jointly recruit a young African professional for one year. The selected candidate will join our joint analysis and dialogue facilitation activities around food security policy and investment processes in West Africa, working for 6 months at the ECDPM’s Food Security programme in Maastricht and 6 months at the IFPRI Office in Dakar.

The position at ECDPM

The CEPF will make small grants (up to US$20 thousand) for biodiversity conservation in Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Projects should be aligned with Strategic Direction 1 of the conservation strategy for the Mediterranean Basin Biodiversity Hotspot. CEPF's announcement includes a list of eligible sites and corridors for proposed projects. The program is open to NGOs, community groups, universities, private enterprises, and individuals. Individuals are encouraged to work with civil society organizations and communities to develop joint applications, rather than apply directly. The deadline for letters of inquiry is 10 September 2015.

The young scientist competition gives young researchers from India and Europe a suitable podium to promote their research projects and to share ideas for cooperation between India and Europe. The competition is open to researchers in India and EU member states (and Associated Countries) aged 19 to 34 years who are affiliated with a company, research center, university, or non-profit organization -- and who have a masters degree or higher. Applicants are invited from all scientific fields for projects or project ideas on the theme of "Water for Health." Videos of five minutes should be submitted before 07 August 2015.

The Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) invites concept notes from organizations to implement its Uplands Program in Myanmar. Focus areas are advisory services to farmers and agricultural producer groups; equitable and sustainable management of natural resources; opportunities for upland smallholders and landless people; and several others. Applications can be submitted by the Government of Myanmar; international and national NGOs; United Nations agencies; other international organizations; academic or research institutions; and private companies. LIFT encourages applicants to identify synergies in the services they provide and form partnerships, where appropriate. The deadline for concept notes is 10 August 2015.

Forbes sponsors the "Under 30 $1 Million Change the World Competition" for social entrepreneurs worldwide. The challenge is open to nonprofit and for-profit social entrepreneurs who are founders or top executives of their organizations, and who were born after 06 October 1985. The challenge is looking for solutions in the areas of extreme poverty, sustainability, education, global health, and other social problems. The challenge will award a total of US$1 million in cash and in-kind prizes. The closing date for submissions is 26 August 2015.

With funding from the U.S. government, the Borlaug Higher Education Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program is implemented by Michigan State University. The program supports long-term training of agricultural and food security researchers and policy advisors at the master’s and doctoral levels. The application deadline for applicants from Ghana, Liberia, and Mali is 15 August 2015.

The D-Prize offers support to pilot social enterprises that address distribution (D) problems in thematic areas that include energy (among others). The energy theme offers one option related to solar lighting, and another related to modern cook stoves. Each competition winner will be awarded up to US$20 thousand, mentoring, and other support. The D-Prize invites concept notes before 26 August 2015 (early deadline); 07 September 2015 (regular deadline); or 21 September 2015 (limited extension).

The EC will make grants to strengthen community forestry and agro-forestry in Honduras for socioeconomic and environmental benefit, and to combat climate change. Eligibility for funding extends to nonprofit organizations in Honduras and EU member states; countries eligible for assistance through the Development Cooperation Instrument; and to qualifying international organizations. Grants will range from €100 thousand to €800 thousand, varying by region. Reference EuropeAid/137126/ID/ACT/HN. The application deadline is 28 August 2015.

The ONE Africa Award honors the exceptional work of individuals and organizations based in Africa to help Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The amount of the award is US$100 thousand, which may be split into more than one prize. Eligibility for the award extends to civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and other groups based in Africa that can demonstrate commitment and success in advocacy to promote the attainment of one or more of the MDGs. The application deadline is 28 August 2015.
