The program BREAD (“Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development”) is a partnership of the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support research that addresses key constraints to smallholder agriculture in the developing world. BREAD announces an Ideas Challenge of up to 25 prizes of US$10 thousand each for ideas on potentially transformative research. The competition is open worldwide to individuals at universities, non-profit research institutes, and other organizations associated with education and research. The winning ideas will determine the focus of proposals in a subsequent phase of the program. Submissions to the Ideas Challenge will be accepted from 01 April 2013 through 30 April 2013.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Fellow for its program on agricultural science, technology, and innovation (ST&I) policy in its Environment and Production Technology (EPTD) Division. This is a two year, exempt, fixed-term, renewable appointment based in New Delhi, India.

The division’s agricultural ST&I policy program seeks to identify policies that favor economic development and the broad-based adoption of productivity-enhancing, poverty-reducing agricultural innovations, and to develop global, regional, and national capacity for ST&I policy analysis, design and implementation. Current research areas include, but are not limited to: agricultural research and development; private investment in pro-poor technology development and delivery; science, technology, and innovation policy; agricultural extension and advisory services; project monitoring and evaluation; and other topics relating to ST&I policy for developing-country agriculture.

The Decision and Policy Analysis Area (DAPA)of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is seeking English speaking recent graduates for 6-12 month internships. CIAT is an international research center, one of the fifteen global centers of the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR). Located in Cali, Colombia and working on international projects in Africa, Asia and Central and Latin America, the DAPA Research Area evaluates the effects of climate change, evaluates technology and knowledge gaps, critically analyses environmental and agricultural policy in Latin America, and considers barriers to market access for small, rural producers in developing countries.

They are also open to receiving Masters students for 3-6 month internships for thesis studies on topics of strategic importance to DAPA. The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) advances human wellbeing, environmental conservation and equity by conducting research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. CIFOR is a CGIAR Consortium Research Center. Their headquarters are in Bogor, Indonesia, and they have offices in Asia, Africa and South America.

The Food Climate Research Network is looking for a communications intern to help raise the profile of the organisation, improve its usefulness and accessibility to users, and help develop collaborations and interactions among a growing network of researchers and policy makers working in the field of food and climate. The internship is offered on a fixed term ending on 31st December 2012 with the intern based working from home. It is envisaged that the internship would be part-time for at least 1 day per week, with the opportunity for more work as the project develops.

Specifically, the intern will be tasked to take the initiative in the following key areas:

CTA’s mandate puts emphasis on facilitating access, exchange and dissemination of information in the fields of agriculture and rural development. The “Policies, Markets and ICTs” (PMI) Programme and its ICT for ARD sub-Programme play a critical role in the realization of the above.
