Structural and functional plant modelling

Plant breeding appears to be a major component in the way to solve the new challenges that agriculture in Mediterranean areas is facing. New techniques allowing to access specific traits of cultivars have to be developed based on non destructive and rapid measurements such as offered by close range remote sensing known as ‘proxidetection’.

The objective of this post doctorate proposal is to combine a 4D plant model with a functioning model as a support to improve field high throughput phenotyping with remote sensors. This is a critical need to enhance interpretation of large amount of genotypic data made available by sequencing methods in constant improvement.

This work will be based on two existing models, the SIRIUS crop functioning model (Jamieson et al., 1998, Lawless et al. 2005) and the ADEL-Wheat architectural model (Fournier et al, 2003, Evers et al 2005). Implementation will use the modelling platform OpenAlea (Pradal et al 2008), dedicated to functional structural modelling of plants. The coupled model will then be used to simulate reflectance and gap fraction with a radiative transfer model (Baret et al., 2007).

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with skills in data analysis and crop modelling. A PhD in one or several of the following fields is expected: agronomy, biostatistics, bioinformatics. A good knowledge of programming (Matlab if possible) and a good ability to communicate in English are required.

The position is available immediately for 21 months. Annual net salary will be around 21,600 euros. The fellow will be hosted in INRA in Avignon, with some stays in other research centres in France.

To be eligible, the candidate should:
- not have resided in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to May 2009.
- have obtained his/her PhD for no more than 3 years upon the date of application.

To apply, please send to Benoît de Solan (email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.): a letter describing your research motivation and experience, a CV including publication list, full contact details of two scientific referees.

The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University's Center for International
Development invites applications for resident fellowships in sustainability science for
the University's academic year beginning in September 2010. The fellowship
competition is open to advanced doctoral and post-doctoral students, and to mid-
career professionals engaged in research or practice to facilitate the design,
implementation, and evaluation of effective interventions that promote sustainable
development. Applicants should describe how their work would contribute to
"sustainability science," the emerging field of use-inspired research seeking
understanding of the interactions between human and environmental systems as
well as the application of such knowledge to sustainability challenges relating to
advancing development of agriculture, habitation, energy and materials, health and
water while conserving the earth's life support systems. This year we will give some
preference to applicants who address the challenges related to meeting human
needs for water or food/agriculture/land use in the context of sustainable
development. In addition to general funds available to support this fellowship
offering, special funding for the Giorgio Ruffolo Fellowships in Sustainability Science
is available to support citizens of Italy or developing countries who are therefore
especially encouraged to apply. The Sustainability Science Program is directed by
Professors William Clark and Michael Kremer, and Nancy Dickson. For more

PostDoc position in Crop Protection / Imaging of Plant Diseases
15 July 2009
University Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn
Workplace Bonn, Germany
Position (PostDoc) We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated person
with a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Agronomy, Geography or related fields and
experience in remote sensing for the detection and discrimination of pests and
diseases.
Project Spectral signatures of leaf diseases in wheat and sugar beet
Description For site-specific control, exact knowledge on the spatial distribution
and tem-poral dynamics of diseases in crops is essential. Remote sensing provides
an option for the detection, identification and quantification of plant diseases. Va-
rious sensor systems have been evaluated on different scales for their potential in
plant disease detection. In this project the spectral signature of leaf diseases in
wheat (e.g. powdery mildew, leaf rust, Septoria leaf blotch, etc.) and sugar beet
(powdery mildew, rust, Cercospora leaf spot, etc.) will be investigated on several
scales - disease symptom, leaf, plant, crop canopy - and in various sta-ges of
disease epidemics. In collaboration with other projects spectral signa-tures (visible
light, NIR, thermal IR) specific to diseases will be developed for the identification of
diseases in early stages of disease development.
Financial support The scholarship is funded by the German Research
Foundation (DFG) in the context of the Research Training Group
(Graduiertenkolleg) 722, Use of Information Technologies for Precision Crop
Protection for 12 months. The scholarship / payment will be according to DFG
guidelines.
Qualifications The successful candidate ideally should have experience in
Sensing Technology, Spectral Analysis, Plant Pathology and/or Geo-Statistics.
He/she should have published the results of earlier projects (Ph.D. study, etc.) in
peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented the work at international meetings
of their scientific community.
